Deserts Animal Care Internship

Interns in this position assist the Deserts staff with the husbandry of dozens of reptile and amphibian species, including turtles/tortoises, snakes, lizards and frogs/toads – as well as meerkats, various birds and plant species.

The Indianapolis Zoo's Internship Program offers a unique opportunity for current college students to become actively involved in the Zoo's conservation, research, education and recreation efforts. Interns can enhance their knowledge and experience in various animal care and administrative roles.

Responsibilities

Typical tasks may include any – or all – of the following:

-Support the Zoo’s mission of protecting nature and inspiring people to care for our world.

-Perform cleaning, feeding and general husbandry of assorted amphibians, reptiles and plants.

-Prepare diets, clean and disinfect utensils, perform other kitchen tasks.

-Assist in animal feeding.

-Assist with general cleanup and maintenance of off-exhibit areas.

-Performs minimal record keeping, including food and medication sheets, as well as a concise daily log; observe animal behavior and update daily task sheets.

-Performs related duties as required.

-Observes and reports equipment and maintenance needs.

-Other tasks as assigned by Deserts Staff.

Qualifications

Zoo Internships are open to current college students – who are at least at entering their sophomore year – enrolled in a four-year degree program. Interns serve 20-40 hours per week for 12 consecutive weeks. Positions are experience-based and are therefore unpaid. The Zoo can provide information to assist with your housing and transportation search.
