Making The Most Out Of Your Internships

Can you believe it’s almost April? This semester has flown by! With the end of the semester approaching, it may also mean the end of your internship is approaching. It can be easy to want to just skate by for the rest of the semester, but often the last month of your internships are crucial. Below I’ve included some tips on how to not let yourself slip and make the best out of your internship.

Don’t get overwhelmed.

It can be easy to get overwhelmed at the end of the semester. Between finals, final projects, and simply passing your classes, life can be hectic when May rolls around. If you’re like me, when you get overwhelmed it’s easy to do nothing. However, don’t let yourself do this! Always take your tasks one at a time to ensure that you’re doing your best work. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Go big or go home.

Often employers will base their decision on whether to offer positions upon ending the internship based on performance. Being on top of everything in the beginning of your internship but falling off near the end can leave a negative impression on your employer. Be sure to make a good, lasting impression on your employer to create the most positive relationship as possible.

Ask your employer about extending your internship.

Have you just had an amazing experience in your internship? Do you wish it could never end? With the right communication and timing, it doesn’t have to! Don’t be afraid to talk to your supervisor about potentially extending or returning to your internship. If the relationship has been mutually beneficial, it’s very possible that you can keep your internship. This is especially beneficial for students who have more semesters of school left. Additionally, the summer can be perfect timing to implement new projects and ideas into your company!

Have a plan.

Whether you’re planning on going home for the summer, or sticking around your school, it’s important to have a plan about what you’re going to do after the semester ends. This alleviates the stresses of trying to find work or figuring out where you’re going to live during finals week. Additionally, plan ahead. If you have a final on Friday at 3 p.m., don’t wait until the last minute, or neglect your internship and other responsibilities to study. Find a good balance and you will have a much less stressful finals week.
