Extending Your Internship

This summer has flown by and before I knew it my supervisor was asking about evaluations and scheduling meeting times to wrap up my internship. I was already sad at the idea of leaving such an amazing work environment, but all good things come to an end, just maybe not as soon as I thought.

Staying as an intern allows for more opportunities to stay and gain more knowledge. I know a lot of people fall in love with their internship and hope for an extended stay. I came up with a list of things that I think will help you get noticed by coworkers and supervisor that shows you’re interested in staying longer.

Be willing to work

If you want to stay on at a location, then you obviously must like what you are doing. If you want to be asked to stay a for another interning period, then make it known that you are eager and willing to put in more effort. Showing that you care about your position will help make it clear that you enjoy being a part of the team and willing to go the extra mile.

Create relationships

Creating connections and relationships with the people you’re working with is essential for every intern. You should get to know the people you work with not only to make your employment more enjoyable, but you never know where the connections could lead. Once relationships are stronger communication is easier and the work being produced is of higher quality.

Try your best

The best way to get your work to be appreciated is if you’re doing everything with your best effort. Not everything you are going to do will be perfect. However, people can notice how much attention you put into what you’re working on.

Stay open-minded

Not every company offers the ability to continue your interning experience and that’s okay! Companies remember two types of interns: really good ones and really bad ones. Being remembered for all the hard work you did will make it possible so that you can get recommended for another position somewhere else.

Interning is a great way to get your feet wet and see what possibilities the future holds. Not every internship experience is going to be your favorite experience, but you learn the most when you are uncomfortable.
