Description

The High School Work-Based Learning Welding Program provides students with hands-on exposure to welding, finishing, quality, and manufacturing within a professional manufacturing environment. The student will work alongside our Finishing Manager and experienced team members to develop practical skills while learning the importance of quality, safety, precision, and teamwork.


The program will begin with an introduction to our Quality Procedures and manufacturing standards. Before performing hands-on welding activities, the student will learn how quality requirements, documentation, inspection, and proper procedures impact the products we manufacture.


As the student progresses through the program, they will gain exposure to our finishing and welding processes and gradually participate in hands-on activities under the direct supervision of trained team members. The goal is to connect classroom education with real-world manufacturing experience while helping the student explore future career opportunities in welding and advanced manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  1. Learn and follow company Quality Procedures, work instructions, and documentation requirements.
  2. Develop an understanding of why quality and precision are critical within our manufacturing environment.
  3. Follow all company safety requirements and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  4. Shadow the Finishing Manager and experienced team members to understand daily operations.
  5. Learn proper handling, preparation, and finishing of manufactured components.
  6. Receive instruction on welding equipment, tools, terminology, and basic welding techniques.
  7. Assist with welding-related activities appropriate for the student's experience and training level under direct supervision.
  8. Learn how to properly inspect work and identify potential quality concerns.
  9. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  10. Demonstrate dependable attendance, punctuality, and a willingness to learn.
  11. Ask questions, accept feedback, and demonstrate continuous improvement throughout the program.
  12. Work professionally and respectfully with employees across the organization.

Qualifications

  1. Be currently enrolled in an approved high school Work-Based Learning or Career and Technical Education program.
  2. Have an interest in welding, manufacturing, machining, or skilled trades.
  3. Be willing to learn and follow detailed instructions.
  4. Demonstrate good attendance and dependability.
  5. Have strong attention to detail.
  6. Be able to work safely and responsibly in a manufacturing environment.
  7. Be comfortable working with tools and manufacturing equipment after receiving proper training.
  8. Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to receive coaching and feedback.
  9. Meet all school, company, and applicable age and safety requirements for participation in the program.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand Quality Procedures

Explain the importance of quality within manufacturing and demonstrate an understanding of basic quality procedures, documentation, specifications, and inspection requirements.

2. Demonstrate Safe Work Practices

Identify common manufacturing and welding hazards, properly use required PPE, and consistently follow established safety procedures.

3. Understand the Manufacturing Process

Describe how welding and finishing fit into the overall manufacturing process and how each operation can affect the quality of the final product.

4. Develop Basic Welding Knowledge

Identify basic welding equipment, tools, terminology, materials, and techniques and demonstrate introductory welding skills when permitted and under appropriate supervision.

5. Develop Finishing Skills

Gain an understanding of component preparation, finishing processes, workmanship expectations, and proper handling of manufactured parts.

6. Apply Quality to Hands-On Work

Understand how to review completed work for workmanship and quality and recognize when a part or process may not meet established requirements.

7. Build Workplace Skills

Demonstrate professional communication, teamwork, dependability, time management, problem-solving, and the ability to accept and apply feedback.

8. Explore Manufacturing Careers

Develop a better understanding of career opportunities in welding, finishing, quality, machining, engineering, and other areas of advanced manufacturing.
