Description
Trinity Lutheran School is a private school with a Christian foundation. Trinity has a student range of 2 year-olds to 8th grade. Our mission is Faith - Family - Future, and is supported by our collaboration with staff, parents, and students. We aim to make every student feel welcomed and loved while encouraging them to learn and grow in academics and faith. As a staff, Trinity is always looking for ways to improve the student and teacher experience. We take pride in making sure students feel that they are safe, challenged academically and above all loved by God.
In this program apprentices will be supervised by the special education teacher and have mentorships with other intervention teachers and some classroom teachers. Apprentices will learn how to
-Describe at least 2–3 strengths and areas of need for students they regularly support and explain how those characteristics influence the supports they provide.
-Identify a student challenge, propose multiple possible strategies, implement an appropriate strategy, and reflect on the outcome.
-Design a learning activity that intentionally uses a student's strength or interest to support development in an area of weakness.
-Create and implement a short learning activity or mini-lesson targeting a specific student skill or area of need.
They will accomplish these learning goals with guidance and hour of professional development provided by the organization.
Responsibilities
Apprentices will work one on one or with a small group guiding designated student(s) through instruction and/or worktime in the general education classroom. There may be times that apprentices will work in the resource room with designated student(s).
- help student navigate materials
- guide student step - by - step instructions
- read aloud to student
- provide extra guided instruction/practice as necessary
- modify materials as needed/necessary
- prep materials
Qualifications
Apprentices require experience working with young children.
Learning Objectives
Competency based objectives include:
- Assists teacher toward maintaining the physical environment to ensure safety, maximize learning and facilitate student independence (e.g., classroom set-up, accessibility of learning materials to students, visual aids, etc.) and a sense of purpose to maintain a positive and challenging learning environment.
- With support from the classroom teacher, clearly and consistently communicate how concepts connect to the big ideas and essential questions within and across disciplines
- Supports direct instruction to students individually, in small groups, and with whole class settings under direction of teacher
- Uses knowledge of students’ strengths and interests to encourage engagement in varied school and community activities under the guidance of the instructional team
