Description

Organization and WBL Program: Blackford County Schools provides a Work-Based Learning (WBL) program designed to introduce students to the foundational aspects of facilities maintenance, building upkeep, and management of buildings and grounds.


Supervision, Training, and Mentorship: The learner will receive direct supervision and daily mentorship from the Lead Custodian. The Athletic Director and Facilities Manager will also provide supervision and mentorship at times.. Training includes step-by-step guidance on facility safety protocols, standard operating procedures for equipment, and resource management.


Learning Goals: The primary goals are to build proficiency in maintaining safe, compliant educational environments, master the handling and safety regulations of facilities maintenance, and develop professional teamwork and problem-solving skills in a professional setting.


Responsibilities

The intern will engage in practical, hands-on tasks focused on building operations, Core responsibilities include:

  1. Assisting with the inspection and maintenance of school facilities to ensure safety and operational compliance.
  2. Learning and applying proper sanitation and green-cleaning techniques across high-traffic educational zones.
  3. Participating in facility set-ups for school events, understanding space optimization and safety hazards.
  4. Shadowing the facilities team during seasonal maintenance cycles and mechanical checks.
  5. Keeping the facilities and building/grounds clean.


Qualifications

  1. Enrolled in a recognized high school or Work-Based Learning program.
  2. Strong interest in facilities management, operations, or environmental services.
  3. No prior management, technical, or multi-year professional experience is required, as this internship serves as an entry-level introduction to the field.
  4. Ability to follow safety instructions and work collaboratively within a team.
  5. Dependable and punctual.
  6. Willingness to listen and learn new skills as well as taking initiative.

Learning Objectives

  1. Safety & Compliance: Learn and demonstrate adherence to OSHA standards, chemical safety guidelines, and the correct utilization of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  2. Operational Excellence: Acquire a functional understanding of facilities operations, preventative maintenance schedules, and zoning workflows.
  3. Sustainability & Resource Management: Gain exposure to sustainable waste management, recycling protocols, and energy-efficient building securement processes.
  4. Employability Skills: Gain work experience and employability skills such as initiative, communication, reliability, problem-solving, teamwork and punctuality.
