Habitat for Humanity Construction Intern

Description

The Construction Intern will support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne’s construction team with new home construction projects. This hands-on learning opportunity is designed to provide exposure to residential construction practices, jobsite operations, volunteer engagement, non-profit leadership, as well as Habitat’s mission.

The intern will work alongside experienced construction staff and volunteers while learning about construction processes, tools, materials, safety practices, and jobsite coordination. The intern will not be responsible for independently supervising volunteers, subcontractors, or construction activities.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, dependability, teamwork, and a commitment to Habitat’s core values of Faithful, Thoughtful, Sustainable, Collaborative, and Transformative.

Responsibilities

1. Assist the construction team with daily jobsite preparation and general construction activities.
2. Support construction projects involving framing, siding, interior finishes, landscaping, and other related activities.
3. Assist with basic construction tasks under the direction and supervision of Habitat construction staff.
4. Learn and follow proper jobsite safety practices and procedures.
5. Assist with organizing, handling, and maintaining construction materials, tools, and equipment.
6. Help prepare the jobsite and work areas for volunteers and construction activities.
7. Observe and learn proper use of hand tools, power tools, equipment, and construction techniques.
8. Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe jobsite.
9. Support volunteer activities as directed by construction staff.
10. Assist with receiving, organizing, and moving materials as needed.
11. Gain exposure to construction quality standards and Habitat construction practices.
12. Communicate respectfully and professionally with volunteers, Partner Families, trade partners, employees, and community members.
13. Participate in team meetings, training, and other learning opportunities related to construction and Habitat’s mission.
14. Assist with other construction-related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Interest in residential construction, building trades, or a related field.
2. Willingness to learn new skills and construction techniques.
3. Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
4. Dependable, punctual, and willing to work as part of a team.
5. Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
6. Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
7. Ability to accept direction, feedback, and coaching.
8. Basic computer skills preferred.
9. Previous construction experience is helpful but not required.

Education and Experience

1. Currently enrolled in high school, trade school, college, or a related educational program preferred.
2. Interest in construction, skilled trades, architecture, engineering, or a related field preferred.
3. Previous construction, volunteer, or hands-on experience is helpful but not required.

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
2. Ability to move safely around construction sites and uneven terrain.
3. Ability to bend, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive movements as needed.
4. Ability to safely use basic hand tools under supervision.
5. Ability to climb ladders when appropriate and under supervision.
6. Ability to lift and carry materials within the intern's capabilities and as safely directed.
7. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
8. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
