Description

With the 2021 publication of his memoir On the Spectrum: Autism, Faith, & the Gifts of Neurodiversity, autistic writer and professor Daniel Bowman Jr. (Taylor University) has secured multiple new writing opportunities (including two new books); public appearances; and in-person and remote meetings.

One book project is a Young Adult novel being transformed into a graphic novel in collaboration with a Chicago-based illustrator. The other is a nonfiction book highlighting stories of autistic people and the organizations serving them.

Professor Bowman and intern will work together to balance the needs of the moment with rich, meaningful editing and publishing tasks so the intern can gain hands-on experience in the book industry. Internship will be relevant and purposeful toward identified career and personal goals, and may include some assistance teaching a creative writing summer class and also completing miscellaneous summer tasks at Taylor’s distinguished international literary journal Relief.

Responsibilities

  • Contributing in meetings with illustrator, agent, editors, publishers, and book marketers
  • Developmental editing of two proposals and full-length book manuscripts
  • Proofreading and line editing polished materials
  • Refreshing author website to reflect newer writings
  • Some assistance with two-week Summer Institute creative writing class at Taylor
  • Some collaborative work on Relief Journal tasks (communicating with authors, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Highly organized and detail oriented

  • Creative and thoughtful

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • University level coursework completed in English, creative writing, editing, and publishing

  • Passion to work for disability justice through the arts and storytelling

  • Familiarity with autism and neurodivergence a plus

  • Some experience with web design or art direction helpful
