Description

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) seeks a highly-motivated and committed individual to join our summer team to implement a unique academic training program for Indianapolis-area high school students from Myanmar (Burma). The program will utilize participatory action research, engaging students in group research projects that explore issues of social justice in their community. Students will gain familiarity with research methodology, while improving their academic English skills and developing critical thinking skills, and other skills necessary to succeed in higher education and career.

Responsibilities

  • Complete staff training (will take place during the first week of the program)
  • Assist the Lead Instructor in successful implementation of the program curriculum
  • Oversee a group of students as they engage in research projects, helping the group overcome challenges as they arise, and ensuring the active participation of all group members in the research process
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Closely work with Program Assistants and Interns
  • Assist the documentation of daily reflections, observations and program activities
  • Prepare bi-weekly reports to lead instructor
  • Participate in program evaluation

Qualifications

  • College student, recent graduate, or Graduate student
  • Strong familiarity with research methodology and/or experience
  • Commitment to participatory action research as a method of engaging and empowering youth to create positive social change
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment/meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet applications
  • Demonstrate high level of professionalism, respect, and personal integrity
  • Able to collaborate with others; a team player with positive attitude
  • Enthusiasm for BACI’s mission and strong commitment to helping disadvantaged students achieve academic and future success
  • International experience preferred – high degree of cultural sensitivity and competence
  • Flexibility and availability/willingness to work some weekends
