Housing Stability Intern
Description
The Bloomington Housing Authority (BHA) and its nonprofit partner, Summit Hill Community Development Corporation (SHCDC), support housing stability and economic mobility for low-income residents in Bloomington. The Housing Stability Internship offers hands-on experience in eviction prevention, housing navigation, and community resource coordination.
Interns are supervised by the Housing Stability Coordinator with weekly check-ins, ongoing mentorship, and training in trauma-informed care, housing-first principles, and local housing systems. Learning goals include developing case management and advocacy skills, understanding housing programs and barriers, and gaining familiarity with community resources and landlord engagement.
Responsibilities
The intern will support housing stability efforts by assisting clients with housing searches, creating and maintaining a rental property database, and helping with landlord outreach. They will participate in eviction prevention work, resource coordination, and client follow-ups. Projects may include mapping community resources, analyzing housing trends, and developing informational materials for clients. Administrative tasks will be minimal and limited to supporting these core functions.
Qualifications
We welcome applicants who are dependable, compassionate, and interested in housing justice, social services, or community development. Strong communication skills, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Basic computer skills and professionalism when working with the public are expected. No prior housing or case management experience is required—training and mentorship will be provided throughout the internship.
