Description

Organization and Internship Program
The Dana Leroyne Causey Family Empowerment Foundation is a community-focused organization dedicated to building strong families, empowering individuals, and supporting sustainable growth in both nonprofit and business sectors. Our internship program is designed to provide students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that bridge classroom knowledge with real-world application.

The Accounting Assistant Internship provides students with the opportunity to gain direct experience in nonprofit and small business accounting practices. Interns will engage in tasks such as developing and designing budgets in alignment with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), preparing expense reports and income statements, creating 1099 forms for contractors, and supporting compliance with all reporting and documentation requirements. In addition, interns will gain experience with Sandata, our employee time and activity management system, learning how to input and reconcile employee records, generate weekly login reports, and ensure accuracy in compliance-related documentation.

Supervision, Training, and Mentorship
The intern will be directly supervised by and given menntorship and guidance from the President/CEO to ensure alignment with organizational goals and professional standards. Training will include an introduction to nonprofit financial management, compliance requirements, and organizational procedures. Mentorship will focus on developing the intern’s ability to work independently, problem-solve, and think critically about financial decision-making in both nonprofit and small business contexts.

Learning Goals
The internship is designed to help students achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Develop a working knowledge of nonprofit and small business accounting systems and GAAP compliance.

  • Strengthen technical accounting skills through preparation of budgets, reports, and forms.

  • Gain proficiency in using technology platforms such as Sandata for employee activity tracking and compliance.

  • Learn the process of employee onboarding from an accounting and documentation perspective.

  • Build organizational and administrative skills through calendar management, time log reporting, and records maintenance.

  • Cultivate professional competencies in communication, problem-solving, and time management.

  • Understand the role of accounting in supporting broader organizational goals, including sustainability and capacity building.

  • Onboarding & Recordkeeping Support: Collaborate with HR and finance staff to ensure all employee onboarding documents are collected, complete, and properly filed. This includes cross-checking financial and compliance forms.

  • Process Improvement Project: Work with the Finance Director to identify areas where reporting, tracking, or data entry processes can be streamlined. The intern may create templates, checklists, or guidelines to improve efficiency and accuracy.

  • Program Budgeting Experience: Participate in the development of program-specific budgets for community initiatives, gaining exposure to how financial planning supports organizational mission and service delivery.
