Description

Little River Wetlands Project (LRWP) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit land trust founded in 1990 by a group of citizens concerned that 85% of Indiana’s wetlands have been destroyed. Our mission is to restore and protect wetlands in the watershed of the Little River, a major tributary of the Wabash River, and to provide educational opportunities that encourage good stewardship of wetlands and other natural ecosystems. We protect over 1,300 acres in Allen and Huntington Counties in Indiana, including five wetland nature preserves and a 140-acre conservation easement on private land.

This internship is a paid part-time position to assist with stewardship of the wetland preserves owned by Little River Wetlands.  On-the-job training and mentorship will be provided by the Preserves & Volunteer Steward.

Learning goals are:

to increase knowledge of wetland plants, both native and invasive;

learn treatment methods for invasives control;

achieve proficiency with basic outdoor equipment

learn teamwork, time management, and ability to work as group and independently

Responsibilities

  • Use herbicide to control invasive plant species using backpack and power sprayers;
  • Mechanical removal of invasive species by pulling or cutting;
  • Assist with data collection, including GPS mapping tools
  • Assist with native plant propagation and installation;
  • Maintain visitor amenities, including benches, boardwalks, trails;
  • Assist with directing volunteers;
  • Follow all proper safety procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a university bachelor program studying environmental science, natural resource management, or related subject;
  • Familiarity with Indiana’s natural communities of plants and animals is desirable;
  • Experience using outdoor tools and light power equipment, or ability to learn;
  • Ability to carry out multiple tasks in an independent and unstructured work setting;
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds;
  • Ability to hike uneven terrain for 1- 3 miles a day with up to 30 pounds on back
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and have a dependable vehicle or transportation
