Summer Camp Tutor
Description
Organization & Internship Program Description
New Beginnings is a community-based nonprofit organization located in Indianapolis, Indiana, dedicated to increasing the educational success of children and families through high-quality childcare, after-school programming and workforce development initiatives. We serve children ages 1–12 and families in underserved communities, with a strong focus on academic achievement, social-emotional development and long-term economic stability.
Our Summer Camp Tutor Internship Program provides college students with hands-on experience working directly with children in a structured educational setting. Interns will serve as tutors supporting students in reading, mathematics, computer literacy and STEM enrichment. Many of the children served are performing below grade level, making this role critical in helping bridge learning gaps through individualized and small-group instruction. Interns will also assist with lesson planning, academic activities and student progress tracking, contributing to a well-rounded summer learning experience.
Supervision, Training, and Mentorship
Interns will receive comprehensive supervision, training and mentorship throughout the program:
- Direct Supervision: Interns will report to the Program Director (Evelyn Evans) and the Lead Teacher/Site Supervisor, who will provide daily guidance, assign responsibilities, and monitor performance.
- Ongoing Mentorship: Interns will work closely with experienced teachers and educational staff, participating in regular check-ins, feedback sessions and collaborative planning meetings. These interactions will support skill development and professional growth.
- Structured Training: Interns will participate in onboarding and ongoing professional development focused on:
- Effective tutoring strategies in reading and math
- Classroom management and positive behavior support
- Child development (cognitive, social-emotional, and academic)
- STEM activity facilitation and engagement techniques
- Data tracking, including reading logs and progress reports
- Hands-On Learning Environment: Interns will gain practical experience through direct engagement with students, implementation of lesson plans and participation in assessments and program activities.
Learning Goals for Interns
The internship is designed to provide meaningful workforce preparation and skill development. By the end of the program, interns will:
- Develop Instructional Skills–Gain the ability to plan and deliver effective tutoring sessions in reading, math, and STEM for diverse learners.
- Enhance Communication Skills–Strengthen verbal and written communication through interaction with students, staff and families, as well as through documentation and reporting.
- Build Professional Competencies–Learn teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and adaptability in a real-world educational setting.
- Understand Child Development--Apply knowledge of developmental stages to support student learning and behavior.
- Utilize Data for Improvement–Learn how to track student progress, analyze outcomes and adjust instructional approaches accordingly.
- Increase Cultural Competency & Community Awareness–Work with diverse populations and understand the role of community-based organizations in supporting families.
Through this experience, interns will emerge as stronger educators, communicators and community contributors, with a deeper understanding of careers in education, youth development and nonprofit leadership.
