Real Estate Development Internship
Description
Are you interested in real estate, urban planning, public policy, finance, or community development? The Bloomington Housing Authority is offering a hands-on internship where you’ll gain real-world experience helping create and preserve affordable housing in our community.
As a Real Estate Development Intern, you’ll work directly with our Director of Real Estate Development and executive team on projects that move from early concept to completed housing communities. This is an opportunity to see how housing projects actually happen—from evaluating properties and assembling financing to monitoring construction and transitioning developments into operation.
What You’ll Gain
This internship provides exposure to the full lifecycle of real estate development, including:
- Affordable housing finance
- Real estate feasibility analysis
- Development planning and due diligence
- Construction and project monitoring
- Community development and housing policy
- Cross-sector collaboration with lenders, investors, attorneys, architects, and government partners
You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how housing projects are developed and how mission-driven organizations expand access to safe, quality housing.
Responsibilities
As an intern, you’ll contribute to real projects while learning the development process. Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting the executive team with affordable housing development projects at various stages, including property evaluation, financing, design development, construction monitoring, and operations.
- Researching potential funding sources and assisting with applications for grants, loans, and housing development programs.
- Supporting marketing and outreach efforts that promote fair housing and community awareness.
- Helping coordinate due diligence activities during property acquisition and early development phases.
- Assisting with preparation of development funding applications, including tax credit components, marketing plans, amenity mapping, and supportive service plans.
- Supporting loan closing preparation by helping organize legal, financial, and due diligence documentation.
- Assisting with the transition of completed housing developments from construction into operations.
- Participating in planning sessions, staff meetings, and industry-related activities.
- Supporting other projects that advance the Housing Authority’s mission.
