Job Description

The Student Technology Intern is a vital member of the "Tier 0-1" support team at Blackford County Schools. Working under the supervision of the department technicians and the building Chromebook Manager, interns gain real-world experience in hardware repair, customer service, and systems administration. This role is designed to empower students with technical skills while ensuring that the district's 1:1 Chromebook initiative remains operational and efficient. The STI reports to the BCS Technician, Chromebook Manager and Director of Technology.

By the end of the internship, the student will:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in enterprise-level asset management and ticketing.
  2. Understand the lifecycle of a 1:1 mobile device fleet in a K-12 environment.
  3. Develop "soft skills" related to professional communication and workplace expectations.
  4. Gain foundational knowledge of network connectivity and cloud-based management consoles (Google Admin).
  5. Possess a competitive edge toward earning industry certifications


Responsibilities

Essential Roles & Responsibilities

1. Hardware Repair & Maintenance
  1. Chromebook Triage: Perform initial diagnostics on student Chromebooks to identify hardware issues (e.g., broken screens, faulty keyboards, battery failure).
  2. Component Replacement: Execute physical repairs, including screen swaps, keyboard replacements, and internal cabling, using the appropriate tools.
  3. Cleaning & Inventory: Maintain the district’s aesthetic and functional standards by cleaning returned devices and keeping an organized inventory of spare parts.
2. HelpDesk & Ticket Management
  1. Customer Service: Staff the Student HelpDesk during designated periods, assisting peers and staff with basic "How-To" questions and device troubleshooting.
  2. Asset Tracking: Use the Vizor ticketing system to document repairs, track loaner devices, and update the status of hardware assets.
  3. Loaner Management: Facilitate the distribution and collection of "Daily Loaners" to students, ensuring all devices are accounted for at the end of the school day.
3. Systems & Software Support
  1. OS Troubleshooting: Assist with ChromeOS updates, "power washing" devices, and resolving basic connectivity issues with the wireless network.
  2. Google Workspace: Provide peer-to-peer support for common Google Classroom and Google Drive issues.
  3. Physical Tech Support: Assist in the setup of classroom technology, such as classroom displays, document cameras, and peripheral cabling.

Qualifications

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  1. Academic Standing: Must be a student in good standing at BJSHS with a strong attendance record.
  2. Technical Aptitude: Possess an interest in computer hardware, electronics, or information technology.
  3. Reliability: Capable of following strict protocols for data privacy and hardware handling as outlined in the BCS Technology Handbook.
  4. Communication: Ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical peers and teachers.
