Education Capstone - Instructional Assistants

Description

Our internship program offers high school students completing the Education Capstone a hands-on opportunity to explore the teaching profession. Interns work as Instructional Assistants in our elementary building, engaging directly with students and supporting classroom instruction.

Supervision is provided by the Capstone course teacher and the building principal, ensuring consistent guidance and accountability. Interns have already completed foundational training as part of their course curriculum. Each intern is paired with a dedicated mentor teacher who offers daily support, models effective instructional strategies, and provides ongoing feedback. In addition, interns have the opportunity to participate in monthly New Teacher Mentorship meetings with district educators, gaining valuable insights into the professional learning community.

Responsibilities

Interns will assist in classrooms by supporting small group instruction, working one-on-one with students, and preparing instructional materials under teacher direction. They will help facilitate learning activities, monitor student progress, and provide additional support during transitions, specials, and recess to promote positive student behavior. Interns will also observe, reflect on, and refine a variety of teaching styles and strategies.

Projects may include designing and leading short learning activities, creating visual aids, assisting with classroom organization that supports instruction, and contributing to school events or special projects. Administrative duties will be minimal (less than 25%) and limited to tasks directly related to instructional support, such as preparing learning materials or organizing resources for lessons.

Qualifications

Interns must be enrolled in the high school Education Capstone course, which includes prior training in instructional strategies, classroom management, and professional expectations.
