Description
Our organization provides hands-on, real-world learning experiences designed to help interns develop the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the construction industry. Rather than assigning only administrative or observation-based tasks, interns are given meaningful responsibilities that contribute directly to active projects and business operations. They perform portions of the same work they would be expected to complete as full-time employees, allowing them to gain practical experience and a clear understanding of industry expectations.
Responsibilities
- Assist with project handoff from estimating by reviewing bid documents, plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Participate in weekly jobsite visits to monitor construction progress, quality, safety, and compliance with plans and specifications.
- Help identify construction challenges and assist in developing solutions that maintain project schedules and budgets.
- Support and reinforce company safety programs and ensure compliance with regulations and company policies.
- Assist with project estimating and preconstruction activities as workload demands.
- Review project plans, specifications, and bid packages for completeness and accuracy.
- Assist with developing and maintaining project schedules, milestones, and planning tools.
- Help prepare and track change orders to ensure work is completed within budget and schedule requirements.
- Assist with preparing subcontracts and purchase orders in accordance with project budgets and specifications.
- Support project financial management activities, including job cost tracking, cash flow reporting, billing, forecasting, invoice review, and change order cost coding.
- Maintain project documentation and coordinate communication among owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
- Assist with preparing project reports, meeting updates, and status communications.
- Support project closeout activities, including punch lists, warranties, operation manuals, record drawings, and contract documentation.
- Assist with project controls, including RFIs, PRs, ASIs, documentation tracking, and follow-up actions.
Qualifications
Pursuing of a 4-year bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, mechanical engineering or applicable degree or Pursuing and/or completion of 2-year Associate Degree with applicable experience.
Learning Objectives
- Develop an understanding of the construction project lifecycle, from preconstruction and estimating through project closeout.
- Gain experience reviewing and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and bid documents.
- Learn how project schedules, budgets, and project controls are developed, monitored, and maintained.
- Build proficiency in project documentation processes, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, and closeout documentation.
- Develop an understanding of construction safety requirements, jobsite procedures, and industry best practices.
- Strengthen communication skills through interaction with project managers, field staff, subcontractors, architects, engineers, suppliers, and owners.
- Gain exposure to project financial management, including cost tracking, forecasting, billing, and budget management.
- Learn to identify construction challenges and participate in problem-solving efforts that support project success.
- Improve organizational skills by managing multiple tasks, deadlines, and project priorities.
- Develop professional competencies including teamwork, adaptability, attention to detail, customer service, and conflict resolution.
- Increase responsibility and independence by completing meaningful project tasks under the guidance of an assigned mentor.
- Build the technical and professional skills necessary for a successful career in construction project management and operations.
