Description

A Whitko Career Academy is a typically a structured work-based learning experience designed for high school or early college students. These internships usually combine elements of sports management, athletics administration, career development, and student-athlete support. The intern will be supervised by the Athletic Director and/or certified athletic trainer. Weekly check-ins will assess growth in technical knowledge and professional behaviors. The intern will maintain a learning journal or task log to document progress and key takeaways.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Assisting in planning and facilitating with the scheduling and logistics for athletic career development events.
  2. Setting up hydration stations, cold packs, or first aid supplies.
  3. Prepare materials needed for taping, stretching, or recovery exercises (under supervision).
  4. Organize and track physical forms, injury logs, and clearance documents.
  5. Assist in organizing wellness sessions, athletic recovery workshops, or guest speakers.
  6. Support outreach on topics such as mental health in athletes or injury prevention tips.

Qualifications

  1. A current high school junior/senior enrolled in a career academy, sports management program, or related career pathway.
  2. Good academic standing academically.
  3. Able to interact professionally with peers, coaches, staff and community partners.
  4. Can manage multiple tasks, track schedules, and assist with events.
  5. Comfortable with Microsoft Office and Google, knowledge of social media platforms and promotions.
  6. Works well in group settings, willing to collaborate and support others.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives should emphasize injury prevention, athlete care, sports medicine principles, communication, professionalism, and teamwork. This would include:

  1. Arriving on time, maintaining a professional appearance, and following workplace policies, ethical standards, and confidentiality requirements.
  2. Demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and respect when interacting with athletes, coaches, and healthcare professionals.
  3. Learn the principles of injury prevention, emergency action procedures, and safe participation in athletic activities.
  4. Observe and assist with basic athletic training duties under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer or healthcare professional.
  5. Assist with preparing treatment areas, organizing supplies, and maintaining athletic training equipment.
  6. Demonstrate effective time management while supporting practices, competitions, and athletic events.
  7. Maintain a journal or portfolio documenting experiences, skills observed, and professional growth throughout the internship.
  8. Participate in regular evaluations with the workplace mentor and work-based learning coordinator to assess progress and establish future career goals.
