Organization Description and Work-Based Learning Program
Greensburg Soy Processors is a family-owned grain elevator, feed mill, and feed store located in Greensburg, Indiana. Founded in 2005, we are committed to providing high-quality agricultural products while maintaining strong relationships with local farmers and supporting the agricultural community.
Our work-based learning program provides learners with hands-on experience in grain merchandising, grain handling, grain quality, logistics, customer service, daily grain elevator operations, and feed sales. Participants will gain exposure to the agricultural supply chain from the time grain is delivered by local producers through storage, processing, and shipment to end users.
Supervision, Training, and Mentorship
The learner will work under the direct supervision of experienced management and operational staff. Training will include:
- Orientation to workplace safety procedures and OSHA standards.
- Grain receiving, grading, sampling, and quality evaluation.
- Weighing inbound and outbound trucks using scale software and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Grain inventory management and storage practices.
- Grain merchandising fundamentals, including grain marketing, contracts, and customer communication.
- Customer service and professional communication with farmers, truck drivers, and feed customers.
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and appealing work environment, including housekeeping of the office, feed store, and surrounding work areas to promote safety and provide excellent customer service.
The learner will receive ongoing mentorship from company leadership, including the Grain Merchandiser, Operations Manager, and Human Resources Manager, who will provide regular coaching, feedback, and opportunities to develop technical and professional skills.

Responsibilities
High School Work-Based Learning Student
Projects and Tasks
The High School Work-Based Learning Student will gain practical experience in agribusiness by assisting with a variety of office, customer service, grain handling, feed, and facility maintenance responsibilities. Tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Office Administration
- Answering and directing incoming phone calls professionally.
- Greeting customers and providing excellent customer service.
- Filing documents and maintaining organized records.
- Data entry into company software and spreadsheets.
- Preparing customer invoices for feed purchases.
- Preparing daily check deposits.
- Assisting with general office duties as assigned.
- Taking customer feed orders in person and by telephone.
- Assisting customers with product selection and order processing.
- Invoicing feed customers accurately.
- Assisting with warehouse operations and loading customer purchases.
- Learning inventory organization and basic inventory management procedures.
- Following established operating procedures and company systems
Grain Operations
- Weighing inbound and outbound grain trucks using the scale system.
- Assisting with grain grading and learning grain quality standards.
- Reading grain markets and learning how market information is communicated to customers.
- Observing grain merchandising practices and customer grain transactions.
- Following established operating procedures and company systems for grain receiving and documentation.
Customer Service
- Providing courteous and professional service to farmers and feed customers.
- Assisting customers with questions and directing them to appropriate personnel when needed.
- Building communication and interpersonal skills through daily customer interactions.
Facility Maintenance
- Cleaning and organizing the office, feed store, warehouse, and feed mill.
- Assisting in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming work environment.
- Mowing and maintaining the grounds around the facility.
- Performing general housekeeping and light maintenance tasks.
Special Projects
- Assisting with preparation for Customer Appreciation events.
- Supporting seasonal projects and company activities.
- Assisting with special assignments and projects as business needs arise.
Professional Development
- Learning to follow company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Developing time management, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrating professionalism, dependability, and attention to detail.
- Assisting other departments as needed to gain a broad understanding of agribusiness operations.
- Completing additional duties as assigned by management to support the daily operations of Greensburg Soy Processors.
Qualifications
High School Work-Based Learning Student
Qualifications
The ideal High School Work-Based Learning Student is motivated to learn about the agricultural industry and is willing to contribute to a positive work environment. Previous work experience is not required, as training and mentorship will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a high school Work-Based Learning or Cooperative Education program.
- At least 16 years of age (or meet program and state requirements for employment).
- Interest in agriculture, agribusiness, customer service, or business operations.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain regular attendance.
- Honest, trustworthy, and able to handle confidential information appropriately.
- Strong work ethic with a willingness to assist wherever needed.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with email and Microsoft Office programs, are helpful but not required.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and established company procedures.
- Demonstrates attention to detail and accuracy when completing assigned tasks.
- Ability to work independently after receiving instruction while also contributing as a member of a team.
- Willingness to perform a variety of indoor and outdoor tasks, including light housekeeping, mowing, warehouse assistance, and office duties.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform light physical activities such as walking, standing, bending, and carrying materials as needed.
