Interns and Mentors Invited to Three Summer Events
Interns from organizations throughout Central Indiana are invited to events at the Fountain Square Theatre Rooftop Garden (June 2), The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis (June 14) and Indiana State Fair (August 4). Each will offer professional development and networking opportunities in addition to time to explore the venues.
Indy Intern Connection, hosted in partnership with the Indy Chamber, will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Fountain Square Theatre Rooftop Garden. Network with local professionals and enjoy the festivities of First Friday with drinks, duck pin bowling, food and open artist galleries throughout Fountain Square. Capacity is limited and online registration is required.
The Childrenâs Museum of Indianapolis event will begin at 9 a.m. (check-in: 8:30 a.m.) with a professional development session. Following the programming, attendees will be free to explore the museum until it closes at 5 p.m. An optional lunch will be served around noon.

My first impression of an internship was at nine years old with the movie, âThe Devil Wears Prada.â From that moment on, I feared the day I would have to face my own version of Miranda Priestly.
When I became a junior at Butler University, it was time to start applying for internships and inching towards a life-long career. Interviews often have a stigma for being brutal. These situations make you question your own thoughts and actions and wonder if itâs too soon for a follow-up call. If an offer is secured, you can only breathe momentarily until your first day.

I recently had the opportunity to go to Indiana INTERNnetâs Intern Meet & Greet with Pete⊠Pete the Planner. If you havenât heard of him, heâs a financial planner by day and comedian by night. Well, he used to be until he decided to combine the two into one. Now, he writes for USA Today and is the author of ten books. He appears on local news broadcasts regularly to advice others on how to make yourself more financially successful. While he was speaking to the group of interns, he catered his speech to appease his audience by talking about student budgeting and student loans.

Four Ways to Gain Experience Before an Internship
Many college students run into the hurdle of not having enough experience for an internship. This is a common issue: how do you gain experience to gain experience at an internship? The good news is that there are other ways to bulk up your resume and enhance your skills. Check out my suggestions below!
1 . Side hustle
A part-time job, or side hustle, is a great way to develop various skills to add to your resume. Part-time jobs can enhance your soft skills: communication, decision-making, teamwork, work ethic and more. Megan McKinney: My internship at Ontario Systems was a huge blessing for me. I was able to enhance my knowledge in cybersecurity, computer networking and project management. I have been very blessed to have several mentors that I have been there for me through it all.

I wouldnât speak at church, I wouldnât stand up and delegate at Girl Scout events, and I would even get nervous when I spoke to groups of 4 or 5 people at a time. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend âForward: Tales from the Young CEOâ, an Indy Chamber event. This was my first professional event, besides a career fair, so I had almost no expectations going in. My green âfirst-timerâ ribbon proudly displayed, I fumbled around nervously for the first 20 minutes of the networking portion of the event. I was at the mercy of my mentor, Nicole Bieker, as she introduced me to all the people she knew at the event.

Indiana INTERNnet is hosting an afternoon event on March 7 from 3-5 p.m. Interns and college students are invited to meet Peter Dunn, Founder of Pete the Planner, and listen to his lively financial tips. Employers are welcome to invite their interns and attend with them as well.

Shooting for Success at IMPACT Awards
Indiana INTERNnet honored excellence among interns, employers and career development professionals at the 11th annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College.
The theme for the luncheon was âShooting for Successâ and Tamika Catchings, four-time Olympic gold medalist, WNBA All-Star and founder of Catch the Stars Foundation delivered the keynote address, âScoring Big with Your Career.â
Before Catchings finished her final season with Indiana Fever, she participated in a National Basketball Association (NBA) program that helps NBA and Womenâs National Basketball Association (WNBA) players plan for life after basketball. Catchings interned at the WNBA league office in New York City. The experience and knowledge she gained through her internship will prepare her for her new position as game analyst for SEC Network.
