My name is Jake Coker.Ā  I am a junior at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, IN where I study Finance and am a member of the EPIC honors program at the Keith Busse School of Business.Ā  I am also a member of the Cougar football team.Ā  Before enrolling at USF, I went to high school in Tecumseh, MI where I grew up.

I was truly blessed to have the opportunity to work at Lincoln Financial Group over the summer.

My experience working at Lincoln Financial can be described as astounding, awe-inspiring and unforgettable. They presented me with a platform for growth and let me take on industry changing projects with the potential to save the company hundreds, thousands and even millions of dollars.

IIN: Tell me about your academic path and how some of your other internships supplemented that.

MU: I majored in Classical Studies with the intention of being a foreign languageĀ teacher. But, as college set in and I started thinking about career paths, I realized how competitive Classical Studies can be. So, I thought about other opportunities that would be impactful on people lives.

I realized financial services is something almost everyone needs guidance with. I was hired for the Northwestern Mutual summer program selling life, property and casualty insurance. I utterly failed at this; I’m not a very good salesman.

IIN: You were a long-time intern with Modern Woodmen of America and worked your way up to a full-time position. Can you tell me more about your career path so far and how the internship helped you get to this point?

LH: I interned with Modern Woodmen in Greenwood during the spring of my junior year in 2013. Then, I interned in a Modern Woodmen branch in the Chicago area during the summer of 2013. My senior year, I worked at a local bank. Then, I decided to go back to Modern Woodmen full-time after graduation.
