Indiana INTERNnet is now accepting nominations for the 15th annual IMPACT Awards, an annual celebration of internship excellence. We encourage you to complete the online nomination form, and share how an individual has made an impact at your organization by committing to internship excellence. The nomination deadline is November 6.

Intern of the Year (3) High School College Non-Traditional *High school and college interns must be enrolled in school during the time of their internship in 2020. The non-traditional category is for an intern who was not an enrolled student at the time of the internship or was 26 years old or older during the internship. Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on February 18 at the 14th Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

These are their stories.

Shelby Waligora: Currently I am focusing on finishing my senior year strong at DeKalb High School with the added obstacles. I’m still interning at the Community Foundation; I will hit one year in January. On February 26, 2019, Indiana INTERNnet will host a gathering of some of the state’s top interns, employers, supervisors and career development professionals in a celebration of internship excellence. The event – which will take place at the Ritz Charles Ballrooms in Carmel – will honor seven winners in the categories of Intern of the Year (high school, college and non-traditional), Career Development Professional of the Year, Employer of the Year (non-profit and for-profit) and Intern Supervisor of the Year.

This year, in lieu of a guest speaker, the IMPACT Awards luncheon will feature a different format: three to four-minute on-stage conversations with each winner led by Indiana Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President of Communications Tom Schuman.

This format change comes from a desire to emphasize the power of Indiana’s internships, professionals and employers. Everyone in attendance can gain valuable insight into what makes for a winning employer, …

I can hear you humming that eighties song already. And, it’s true. We’re counting down to the deadline for IMPACT Awards nominations – and we cannot believe October 22 is almost here!

If you haven’t heard of the IMPACT Awards, it’s the internship equivalent of the Oscars. Imagine your favorite intern finally getting recognized for their excellent work this past year. The difference is that you get to play a first-hand role – not just in celebrating them, but also in nominating them.

“It’s the internship equivalent of the Oscars.”

Just like the Academy Awards, the IMPACT Awards take place in February and include multiple categories: Intern of the Year (High School, College and Non-Traditional), Employer of the Year (For-Profit and Non-Profit), and Career Development Professional of the Year. Don’t worry, you don’t have to wear a fancy cocktail dress to this event – or get anxious about Meryl Streep …

The IMPACT Awards Luncheon was a great way to see some of Indiana’s brightest interns, professionals and companies. I had the opportunity to learn why Indiana is such a great place to work and intern.

Caroline Dowd-Higgins’ speech was very moving and inspired me to create my own career plan path. She stated that 70% of employees are disengaged and unhappy. This really spoke to me because I’ve always believed in finding a career I will love going to each day and where I can make a difference.  Her speech was relatable–stating that it’s okay to change your mind and that we are each a “work in progress.”

As an intern myself, it was great to listen to three different rock star interns’ (high school, college and nontraditional) success stories. It demonstrates the work you put forth in internships directly affects your career path, making it that much easier to land …
