Meet the Intern: Emily Combs

Greetings!

Iā€™m Emily, the Outreach Intern here at Indiana INTERNnet this summer. I feel grateful and excited for the opportunity to spend the next several months promoting experiential learning in my home state!

Iā€™m originally from Fort Wayne, where I attended Homestead High School and had my first internship experiences as a senior there. I really appreciate the freedom I had to gain professional experience before college, and thatā€™s a major part of why Iā€™m so excited about joining the Indiana INTERNnet team now. This is my fifth formal internship, so I guess you could say itā€™s a passion! Last summer I was a part-time intern at an Indianapolis nonprofit called Tangram and at Prudentialā€™s Indiana Financial Group. My time in both companies taught me how to apply what I had been learning in the classroom to actual projects and problems.

Iā€™m a rising senior at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, …

Meet the Intern: Alysse Harges

Hello!

My name is Alysse Harges, and I am very excited to be the outreach intern for spring 2020 here at Indiana INTERNnet.

Iā€™m a second semester senior at Ball State University studying public relations with a double minor in sociology and natural resources. Originally from the Windy City, I attended Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences and graduated from DeVry University Advantage Academy. I played tennis and volleyball during my high school career, but my favorite was track and field. I am a huge fan of city living and iced coffee on a hot summer day.

On campus, Iā€™m a member of Alpha Phi Omega, the largest coeducational service fraternity in the U.S. I serve on both the service and pledge committee, taking an active role in orchestrating service projects and bringing in a new class of initiates. My favorite place …

Advice For Starting Your First Internship

When I got offered the job here at Indiana INTERNnet, I was a freshman in college. At that time, I had no idea what being an intern really meant or what I was getting myself into. As I’m finishing up my third week on the job, I have come across some helpful hints for starting your first internship and what to expect.

First Day NervesĀ  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

For me, my first day was terrifying. I was so nervous about what to do, what to say, how to act, and everything in-between. I did not want to make myself stand out in any way, or say the wrong thing, which made everything worse. The whole day was amazing and I could go back to that day and just tell myself that everything was fine. My first piece of advice is one …

Meet the Intern: Makayla Walke

Hello! My name is Makayla Walke, but I mostly go by Kayla. I am very excited to be Indiana INTERNnetā€™s summer intern for 2019. I just finished my freshman year at Marian University, where I am currently studying marketing.

Before I came to Marian, I attended high school in Crawfordsville, Indiana. I grew up in Waynetown with a population of a little over 900, and surrounded by cornfields. It was a big change moving to Indianapolis and experiencing traffic that was not just from an oversized tractor on the road. I love being in the city so far and can see myself living here in the future.

My previous work experiences include small summer jobs like being a slide monitor at a local pool and making pizzas at a Pizza King. My job I had throughout high school was at an Ace Hardware. I loved each one of these …
