It’s a tough job market for recentĀ collegeĀ graduates.

Of the workers who graduated from college in the past two years, 41 percent say they are underemployed and working in jobs that do not require their college degrees, according to aĀ 2013 survey from Accenture, a consulting company.

And even with their degrees, nearly 63 percent of recent graduates said they will need more training in order to get the job they want, the survey states.

Faced with this reality, many college students are doing everything they can to be more marketable after graduation.

It Pays to Intern

Although wage should not be as important as experience when determining which internships to pursue, the idea of making a good chunk of change is always appealing.Ā 

When I was still an undergraduate student, I would ask my fraternity brothers if anyone else planned on interning in the summer.Ā  I remember asking a younger guy in the house if he planned on applying for any internships.Ā  He replied, ā€œNo, I plan on working at a factory like I do every summer where I can make $15/hr, so thatā€™s way better.ā€

He, like many other students today, didnā€™t realize that internships pay fairly well:

On average, bachelorā€™s degree students taking part in internships in 2011 will earn an average of $16.68 an hour, according to results of NACEā€™s 2011 Internship & Co-op Survey.Ā 

At the masterā€™s degree level, the average hourly rate is $24.21.
