How to Fight Burnout

The weather outside seems to be consistently cold, and not in a cute, Instagram-worthy seasonal kind of way. Thereā€™s been rain, and lots of gray skies. If youā€™re a student, youā€™re in the midst of a heavy workload. If youā€™re working, daylight hours are decreasing, and youā€™re probably waking up when itā€™s dark, and heading home when itā€™s nearing sunset. Everyone is likely feeling the effects of burnout, a state of physical or mental exhaustion after prolonged exposure to similar stressors. Hereā€™s how to fight it.

Take breaks throughout your day.

Personally, I know that Iā€™ve always tried not to take breaks, both when I was in college and now. I worried that they would distract me and ruin my productivity. It felt like a sign of weakness. This is the wrong perception of breaks.

From Yard to Office

Following my senior year in high school, as some may say, I entered the real world. The first Saturday of the summer is where it all started.

My first day of work ā€“ not sports, not school ā€“ but real work. On this day instead of strapping up my cleats or tying my shoe laces, I was lacing up my boots and was ready to get after it. I was working as part of an installation crew planting trees. Some may not understand the process of planting a tree, but itā€™s very hard work. From digging the hole to moving the tree to cleaning up, it is all physically demanding.
