Pete the Planner & Hattie the Intern

Hattie Hynes is a Recruiting/HR Marketing Intern with Milliner & Associates. She will graduate from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 2018.

I recently had the opportunity to go to Indiana INTERNnet’s Intern Meet & Greet with Pete
Pete the Planner. If you haven’t heard of him, he’s a financial planner by day and comedian by night. Well, he used to be until he decided to combine the two into one. Now, he writes for USA Today and is the author of ten books. He appears on local news broadcasts regularly to advice others on how to make yourself more financially successful. While he was speaking to the group of interns, he catered his speech to appease his audience by talking about student budgeting and student loans.

He started out by asking us how we paid for our social lives during college. Typically, it’s one of four answers. First, …

Intern Meet & Greet with Pete

Indiana INTERNnet is hosting an afternoon event on March 7 from 3-5 p.m. Interns and college students are invited to meet Peter Dunn, Founder of Pete the Planner, and listen to his lively financial tips. Employers are welcome to invite their interns and attend with them as well.

A networking session will follow the presentation to connect with fellow interns. Beverages and snacks will be provided, courtesy of Baldwin & Lyons, Inc.

This is a free event, and space is limited. Please contact Karissa Bash, kbash@indianachamber.com, for more details and to RSVP by Tuesday, February 28.

Dunn is a local comedian, author, columnist and financial wellness educator. His organization, Pete the Planner, helps individuals with finance troubles get back on track through publications, broadcasts, speaking engagements and more.

During last year’s summer engagement event at the Indiana State Fair, Dunn advised interns on moving out of their parents’ houses …

Networking, Financial Guidance and Funnel Cakes

Last Friday, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the third (and final) intern engagement event of the summer. The interns were ready for a full day of fun, which started with a round of networking bingo!

Each player searched for a fellow intern who matched a description on the bingo card. For example, an intern who has studied abroad or one has complete multiple internships. Once a row or column was completed, the player was entered in a drawing for Fair Bucks (dollar-amounted vouchers to be used only at the Indiana State Fair). Janet Boston, Executive Director of Indiana INTERNnet, announced the winners-all three were Salesforce intern- during her welcoming speech.

The entertainment continued with two representatives from the Indiana State Fair making an on-stage appearance. Mark Anderson, Director of Human Resources at the Indiana State Fair Commission, thanked everyone for coming and discussed …

Intern-to-Hire Calls Indy “Home”

The journey Alex Eaton embarked on after his sophomore year has come full circle.

A recent Indiana University graduate, Eaton, utilized Indiana INTERNnet to apply for an internship position at Pete the Planner, a small financial wellness company based in Indianapolis founded by Peter Dunn. Dunn is an author, radio personality and financial expert.

Now, Eaton has transitioned into his new full-time role as the Director of eLearning at Pete the Planner.

While his job involves marketing Pete the Planner’s online platforms, he wears many hats during the day.

“I’m reaching out to a perspective client and starting the sales process, I’m running the actual product demos all the way to helping sign them on as clients, and I’m working with them once they are clients to make sure everything is working,” Eaton explains.

Pete broke down the secrets to good credit, how to pay off debt, three keys to budgeting, and ten ways to create financial momentum. Check out his website for more information, or even invest in one of his books—you won’t regret this purchase. He managed to fit in a toilet paper analogy, what the heck a 401k is, and what your parents have been wrong about all in a one hour.

If you couldn’t attend and you’re looking for a real takeaway, check out Pete’s ideal budget. It’s simple! If you spend less than the allocated percentage in one category, you can reallocate that money to another category (whether it is paying student loans or the new pair of shoes of you’ve been eyeing).
