Achieving Work-Life Balance

At 19, I didn’t think I would have to understand what this whole “work-life balance” thing really is. But I’ve learned not every day is a piece of cake. It’s better to know that now, instead of thinking everything is going to be exactly how you want it to be. Some days are easier than others, but that’s just how life goes. Balancing 18 credit hours, an on-campus job, and an internship hasn’t been the smoothest thing, but I’ve slowly established a routine. I know I’m not the only student going through something similar and wanted to share some lessons I learned throughout this process.

Accept the Bad Days

Sometimes life just gets in the way and nothing is how you planned. That’s okay! There are two things I like to remember on bad days. First, you’ve survived 100 percent of your previous bad days. Second, you never have to …

The Power of Social Media

It’s no secret that social media has slowly become a part of our everyday lives. Between snapping pictures and finding new memes, social media can hold a lot of power when it comes to finding your next internship or job.

It’s important to keep your profiles clean because you never know who could come across what you’re posting. You need to realize that companies want the right people representing them. This means watching what you say, being aware of who you follow and interact with, and being careful about what types of pictures you’re posting. Some people think making fake profiles under different names is safe, but the accounts can still be connected back to the real owners.

While it might seem fun to make that post now, it could cost you a job offer in the future. It’s okay to enjoy your youth and have fun, but some activities …

Self-Care Tips

Whether it’s work or school, everyone always has something on their mind. It’s important to take a step back once in a while, to regain focus and stay strong mentally and physically. Here are some of my best self-care tips.

Watch Some Movies/TV

Taking some time to just watch hilarious movies and shows can help clear the mind. I know after a long day my favorite thing to do is to get comfy and watch some Netflix shows. If you need some recommendations on what to watch, I’ve got you covered: Schitt’s Creek, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, New Girl, Stranger Things, The Office (but who hasn’t watched this yet), Parks and Recreation (another classic), and Sherlock.

Read a Book

I know some people aren’t the biggest fans of reading, and think that they only need to read for school-related activities. But for me, reading is one of the best ways …

Internship Advice From a Student/Intern

One of the biggest goals in the early stages of our careers is to land an internship, but there are some steps you must take before you apply. There are several things to do when applying for internships such as: researching companies, preparing for interviews, resume updates, etc. In the early stages of my search for an internship I thought I had mastered everything. In fact, I thought my resume and interview skills were excellent. Later, I learned that wasn’t the case and that it needed improvement.

Career services

Career services can help you with your resume, career advice and internship help. When I used to apply for internships early on, I hardly received interviews, so I had a career advisor help me restructure my resume. The advisor provided me with advice on how to improve my resume, and then I started receiving more interviews. Next, the career center helped …

Finals: Setting Yourself Up For Success

We’re nearly at the end of November. If you’re in school, that means one of the most dreaded times of the year is coming up: finals week. You still have some time to set yourself up for success, and take it from me, you want to start now instead of procrastinating. So, what can you do to make sure your finals go smoothly?

Start preparing early.

You’ve probably heard it a million times, but it still rings true: start preparing for finals now instead of a few days before your exams. It’s so much easier to retain information when studying at a normal pace. Create a study schedule and stick to it! This makes studying far more approachable than trying to tackle everything at once.

How much are your finals worth?

As bad as it sounds, it isn’t worth it to study just as hard for a final that’s worth …

How to Handle Allergy, Cold and Flu Season

“Winter is coming.” A phrase that strikes fear into the hearts of many. Not just because it means something major is impending on Game of Thrones, but because it means the time for getting sick is upon us. Whether it’s just getting a common cold, or something major like the flu, ‘tis the season of sickness. Here’s how to navigate life during what’s sure to be a tiring time!

Utilize preventative measures.

The easiest way to handle getting sick is using preventative tactics. Get your flu shot, not just for your sake, but for everyone else’s! If you skipped your shot, it doesn’t mean you didn’t get someone else sick. Don’t want to stop by your doctor to get the flu shot? Go to Target. It sounds weird, but the MinuteClinics inside Target stores are doing free flu shots AND they give you a $5 Target coupon! In addition to …

Self-Care is in the Air

At this point in the year, life can start to feel hectic. Class work and projects are starting to pile on. Internships are starting to really pick up. And to top it all off, the holidays are approaching! That means plenty of gatherings for family and friends, gift giving, finding the perfect Halloween costume and more.

While all this is going on, it can be easy to forget about the most important person
YOU! So, to help you relax as you ease into fall, I made a list of helpful self-care tips.

Make sure to aside some time for yourself

Find some time, even if it’s only five minutes, in your busy schedule each day to focus on yourself. During that time, make sure that you are only doing things that bring you happiness. This mini-timeout can allow you to regroup and recharge before bouncing right back in to getting …

How to Fight Burnout

The weather outside seems to be consistently cold, and not in a cute, Instagram-worthy seasonal kind of way. There’s been rain, and lots of gray skies. If you’re a student, you’re in the midst of a heavy workload. If you’re working, daylight hours are decreasing, and you’re probably waking up when it’s dark, and heading home when it’s nearing sunset. Everyone is likely feeling the effects of burnout, a state of physical or mental exhaustion after prolonged exposure to similar stressors. Here’s how to fight it.

Take breaks throughout your day.

Personally, I know that I’ve always tried not to take breaks, both when I was in college and now. I worried that they would distract me and ruin my productivity. It felt like a sign of weakness. This is the wrong perception of breaks.

Taking brief breaks is proven to help with your focus during prolonged work and fight …

Sleep and Productivity: They Go Hand in Hand

Now that we’re entering midterm season (I know, sorry for bringing it up), plenty of students sleep less as the amount of schoolwork increases. If you’re not in school and working, it’s easy to feel like you’re not getting enough rest in today’s hectic world. Regardless of your situation, sometimes you just don’t get enough sleep.

How does sleep really impact your work?

One study found that lack of sleep is directly related to poor levels of function at work, but many likely find that an obvious conclusion. However, it gets worse. Another study found that while sleep deprivation doesn’t necessarily impact rule-based cognition (think mostly mindless tasks, like standardized tests), it negatively affects your innovative thinking, strategic planning, and risk analysis.

If you’re in school, you definitely need your planning skills to manage your schedule, and innovative thinking is often needed when working on assignments. If you’re working, whether …
