When I was 16 years old, I hated public speaking. I wouldn’t speak at church, I wouldn’t stand up and delegate at Girl Scout events, and I would even get nervous when I spoke to groups of 4 or 5 people at a time. As you can imagine, I was mortified when I saw that I had to take a public speaking class in order to graduate from practically any university. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend “Forward: Tales from the Young CEO”, an Indy Chamber event. This was my first professional event, besides a career fair, so I had almost no expectations going in. My green “first-timer” ribbon proudly displayed, I fumbled around nervously for the first 20 minutes of the networking portion of the event. I was at the mercy of my mentor, Nicole Bieker, as she introduced me to all the people she knew at the event.

Indiana INTERNnet is hosting an afternoon event on March 7 from 3-5 p.m. Interns and college students are invited to meet Peter Dunn, Founder of Pete the Planner, and listen to his lively financial tips. Employers are welcome to invite their interns and attend with them as well.

A networking session will follow the presentation to connect with fellow interns. Beverages and snacks will be provided, courtesy of Baldwin & Lyons, Inc.

I had the opportunity to attend Indiana INTERNnet’s IMPACT Awards this past week. It was a little crazy, because I was the only person in the room that I knew. Nonetheless I jumped right in, headfirst. I went to my assigned seat and starting talking to the people at my table.

When Hannah Dodd started her geographic information systems (GIS) internship with the city of Butler, she had little knowledge of the field. That would quickly change as Dodd was contributing to projects within just a few days of beginning in her position.

During my sophomore year at IUPUI, I had fully intended to do homework and get through classes. In a fall business communications class, I was working on a group project with a couple of classmates when one of them, Jimmy, asked if I was going to the Indiana Means Business Career Fair. Indiana INTERNnet honored excellence among interns, employers and career development professionals at the 11th annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon, sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College.

The theme for the luncheon was “Shooting for Success” and Tamika Catchings, four-time Olympic gold medalist, WNBA All-Star and founder of Catch the Stars Foundation delivered the keynote address, “Scoring Big with Your Career.”

Before Catchings finished her final season with Indiana Fever, she participated in a National Basketball Association (NBA) program that helps NBA and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) players plan for life after basketball. Catchings interned at the WNBA league office in New York City. The experience and knowledge she gained through her internship will prepare her for her new position as game analyst for SEC Network.

Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) are continuing to advocate the importance of internships through the Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program.

EARN Indiana is a mutually-beneficial program for employers and students. Eligible students benefit from a wide variety of positions offering competitive pay and valuable experience. These internships can be used to explore career interests, develop transferable skills, apply academic coursework to the professional world, examine career interests and earn college credit.

Employers with an approved internship can be reimbursed for up to 50% of an eligible intern’s wages. Interns can bring a fresh take to the organization and assist with backburner projects. There is also the opportunity for talent acquisition (promoting to full-time positions) and recruitment of other students.

The holiday season in Indianapolis always starts with a flash! The Circle of Lights is a wonderful tree-lighting tradition that happens the day after Thanksgiving. Although the Soldier & Sailors Monument isn’t actually a tree, it does a great job of creating holiday cheer for the millions of gatherers each year. It can seem like a breath of fresh air from all of the crazy Black Friday shopping that occurs earlier in the day. Don’t worry if you missed the ceremonial lighting, you can still marvel at the pretty lights by visiting Monument Circle.

As my time with Indiana INTERNnet is coming to an end, I wanted to extend my genuine gratitude and share the best parts about my evolution as an intern with everyone! I’ve had such a rewarding and educational experience working with some of the best minds in Indiana’s workforce development and non-profit sectors. Indiana INTERNnet showed me not only how influential internship programs are for future students, but also showed me a deeper part of myself that values mentorship and personal development.

Claire Brumback graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, with a minor in Women’s Studies. During her degree program, she interned at U.S. Kids Magazines at the Saturday Evening Post. She is currently an intern in the Public Affairs department at Indianapolis Power and Light Company.

Internships are a great kick start to your career, and most degree programs won’t let you graduate without having one. Real-world experience is just as important as all those classes you have been taking for the past few years.

As labor and learning initiatives grow with the needs of our shifting economy, educators and employers are beginning to emphasize the importance of internships and work-and-learn experiences for the younger demographic.

High school students should be considered as young professionals. When you factor in the multi-tasking of their studies, athletic activities, managing relationships with friends and family, and acing their SATs for the hopes of attending their dream university, they truly understand how to balance work with play. Navigating through the occasional drama and misfit adventures, students graduate high school with a better understanding of their self-worth. On August 31st, Milliner & Associates gave me the opportunity to grow as a human resources (HR) professional by attending the HR Indiana Annual Conference. Wow, I was blown away by just the one day I was there. On that day I attended with two other co-workers who were able to guide me through the conference, as well as help lead me to the sessions that would be most beneficial. As an intern, I would have never imagined that I would be able to learn and grow as a professional by being able to attend the largest HR conference in the Midwest and one of the largest in the nation!

In 2015, Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) began working with four regions in the state to enhance our statewide efforts. These regions were selected based on opportunity and previous interest in partnerships with IIN and educational institutions in the selected area. The selected regions include Northwest Indiana, North Central Indiana, Indianapolis and surrounding counties, and Southwest Indiana. enFocus, a non-profit organization focused on innovative ways prevent brain drain, is IIN’s North Central Indiana partner.

When I tell people that I moved from Chicago to South Bend I often get confused looks and questions as to why. However, in my past two years here I have grown to appreciate all that South Bend has to offer. Leaving Chicago pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and pop the ‘bubble’ that surrounded me from my hometown into college, fifteen miles north from where I grew up.
