Internships: Expectations Versus Reality

For most people there is a clear picture of what comes to mind when hearing the word ā€œintern.ā€ The scared, intimidated college student that brings coffee when needed, and stands by the copier making copies for everyone in the office. I thought the same thing for the longest time. Now I know there is so much more than just coffee and copies.

Internships give students an opportunity to get real life experience in a field they are interested in. internships allow for students to gain professional experience before they graduate from college and prepare them for when it is time to look for full-time employment.

More and more internships are allowing interns to choose projects to work on throughout their time at the company. This allows for the student to walk away with an excellent resume builder. With help and guidance along the way, interns can create great projects and …

Could I do this long-term?

With the way internships are set up you are only there for a set amount of time. Because of this you get a real taste of what it would be like if you had a full-time position with this company. Do you like the environment and culture around you? What would you change about this position? What do you like about this position? These are some things to think about when looking at your future positions.

Where do I want to be?

Internships are not only an amazing way to get hands on experience in the workplace, but they also serve as an amazing way to …

Favian’s Farewell to Indiana INTERNnet

Goodbye Indiana INTERNnet,

As my spring internship wraps up with Indiana INTERNnet there are many things, Iā€™m grateful for and look forward to! I’m thankful that the Indiana INTERNnet team took a chance on me to be part of the team for the spring. During my time here I had great overall experience being part of the team and working with them. I was able to accomplish many things during my time and tried new things out. There are many wonderful people I met throughout my time here and have made great connections. I learned what it was like to be in a professional environment and how to interact with others. I can now say I know what it feels like to work a nine-to-five.

This internship helped me gain many valuable skills that will help transition into the professional world without a problem. I …

Intern Spotlight: Dei’Marlon Scisney

Hello everyone, my name is Deiā€™Marlon Scisney, but most people know me as ā€œD.ā€ I am from Evansville, Indiana and I am a rising junior from Wabash College. I am currently working towards a Biology major with English, Spanish, and Chemistry minors.

This will allow me to attend medical school after graduation, but life and experience could always steer me in a different direction. Like the Greek medical genius Hippocrates, medicine/healthcare is the temptress of my mind. Furthermore, with my desire to be an advocate for social, political, and economic issues, this internship in Government Affairs at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, in a way, found me.

Already, Iā€™ve felt so welcomed which has made for a smooth transition into this internship. There is most definitely a purpose or motive behind getting involved with an initiative and being unified for a specific cause, which means, understanding how to be comfortable, …

Getting Into A Nine To Five Routine

With this being my first professional job, I have never had to experience the struggle that is the nine to five routine. It was an extremely hard task for the first couple of days. It took time getting used to waking up early and working all day. My past retail jobs offered me a few experiences of working an all-day shift, but it was never very consistent. I wanted to share some tips that I have come across when it comes to getting used to working a full day for the first time.

Get some rest

Even though it might be the summer right now, going to bed early is the biggest piece of advice I can give. Instead of staying up all night watching Netflix, putting your phone down earlier can help. The eight-hour sleep theory is true, and I have experienced it firsthand. Making sure you are fully …

How Taking a Chance Can Benefit Your Future Self

ā€œYou miss 100% of the shots you donā€™t takeā€ -Wayne Gretzky

Even though everyone, everywhere, frequently mentions this quote (especially if you’re a fan of The Office), it really carries a great meaning.

Big changes are difficult and scary. I had no idea what to expect when I started my first internship here at Indiana INTERNnet. I had had a few jobs before this, but no internship experience or working in a professional office space. A week before I started, I second guessed myself as to whether I made the right decision to take the position. I had just finished my freshman year of college and was completely convinced I was not ready to take on this responsibility

Whether itā€™s moving to college or starting a new job, change can be scary. If you donā€™t try, you donā€™t know. I hope that if you are considering making a change in …

Internship Advice From The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Panel

In June, interns from around the state attended Indiana INTERNnetā€™s first engagement event of the summer. Interns came together at The Childrenā€™s Museum of Indianapolis to network, explore, engage in a personal development seminar, and hear from a panel of past and present Childrenā€™s Museum interns.

Panelists shared their stories, while attendees asked questions regarding career paths and entering the workforce.

The future
One of my biggest takeaways was that itā€™s okay to not know what you want to do. Taking everything one day at a time was a large focal point that the panelists hit on. They all spoke of their past experiences and how they got to where they are today.

It was interesting to hear the different ways they wound up at the museum. Something they had in common: All had reached a point where they had no idea what they wanted to do or where …

Advice For Starting Your First Internship

When I got offered the job here at Indiana INTERNnet, I was a freshman in college. At that time, I had no idea what being an intern really meant or what I was getting myself into. As I’m finishing up my third week on the job, I have come across some helpful hints for starting your first internship and what to expect.

First Day NervesĀ  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

For me, my first day was terrifying. I was so nervous about what to do, what to say, how to act, and everything in-between. I did not want to make myself stand out in any way, or say the wrong thing, which made everything worse. The whole day was amazing and I could go back to that day and just tell myself that everything was fine. My first piece of advice is one …

Career Advice From The Vice President of Communications and Operations

Earlier this week we had the opportunity to interview a current employee of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Tom Schuman is the Senior Vice President of Communications and Operations for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. We asked him about his previous work experiences and how it prepared him for his career.

Indiana INTERNnet: What is your current position and what do you do?

Tom Schuman: Iā€™m the Senior VP of Communications and Operations. I know it sounds like an intense title, but it isnā€™t! Communications is broad because there are many things you do. When I started (at the Chamber in 1998) most communications was print and newsletters whereas now itā€™s more diverse with electronic, social media, video, and some print. Much of the communications work is communicating with members and stakeholders. On the operations side of things, it is more of the business things like office …
