If you’ve thought any or all of these things in the past few weeks, you’re probably in the same situation as I am. My hope is that by the time you finish reading this, you’ll be a bit calmer and less frantic about the future.

Indiana’s Talent Gap and Brain Drain/Gain Workshop

Indiana INTERNnet, Purdue University, Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Lilly Endowment, Inc., and Indiana Commission for Higher Education have joined forces to coordinate Indiana’s Talent Gap and Brain Drain/Gain Workshop held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Human Resources Conference & Expo on April 26th from 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The workforce survey conducted in 2016 by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce found that 45% of respondents had left jobs unfilled in the past year due to under-qualified applicants. This is an increase from 39% in 2014. For the 2013-14 through 2015-16 academic years, 50% of bachelor-level graduates at Purdue University who were from Indiana found employment outside the state. Further, for these same years, only 14% of graduates from other states and 20% of international bachelors-level graduates stayed in Indiana. These are symptoms of a set of challenges facing the state. The challenges are not new and many efforts by government, …

Interns and Mentors Invited to Three Summer Events

Interns from organizations throughout Central Indiana are invited to events at the Fountain Square Theatre Rooftop Garden (June 2), The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (June 14) and Indiana State Fair (August 4). Each will offer professional development and networking opportunities in addition to time to explore the venues.

Indy Intern Connection, hosted in partnership with the Indy Chamber, will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Fountain Square Theatre Rooftop Garden. Network with local professionals and enjoy the festivities of First Friday with drinks, duck pin bowling, food and open artist galleries throughout Fountain Square. Capacity is limited and online registration is required.

 

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis event will begin at 9 a.m. (check-in: 8:30 a.m.) with a professional development session. Following the programming, attendees will be free to explore the museum until it closes at 5 p.m. An optional lunch will be served around noon.

New Web Site Features Provide Convenience and Encourage Connections

There is much more to the updated IndianaINTERN.net (IIN) than meets the eye! Along with a fresh new look, we’ve added multiple features to the site to enhance the experience for students, employers and educators. These additions make it easier for students and employers to connect.

New features include:

In-Site Messaging

This new feature allows employers to conveniently message students without ever leaving the site. IIN’s in-site messaging also makes it easy for employers to recruit applicants. Registered employers can search for interns by keyword, school, major, location and more. After finding students who fulfill the internship’s needs, employers can send those students a message inviting them to apply.

For example, an employer with a marketing internship in Indianapolis could search for students on the web site who are marketing majors and live in Marion County. Then, they’re able to view the students’ profiles and resumes, and send more information …

The Expectation Versus Reality of my Internship

My first impression of an internship was at nine years old with the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada.” From that moment on, I feared the day I would have to face my own version of Miranda Priestly.

When I became a junior at Butler University, it was time to start applying for internships and inching towards a life-long career. Interviews often have a stigma for being brutal. These situations make you question your own thoughts and actions and wonder if it’s too soon for a follow-up call. If an offer is secured, you can only breathe momentarily until your first day.

Autumn Ogrin: I was introduced into a business that I was not entirely familiar with, but I knew few agricultural aspects. Therefore, from the beginning I became aware of the resources the business sold, the services offered, and the prices of each product/service. I recently had the opportunity to go to Indiana INTERNnet’s Intern Meet & Greet with Pete
 Pete the Planner. If you haven’t heard of him, he’s a financial planner by day and comedian by night. Well, he used to be until he decided to combine the two into one. Now, he writes for USA Today and is the author of ten books. He appears on local news broadcasts regularly to advice others on how to make yourself more financially successful. While he was speaking to the group of interns, he catered his speech to appease his audience by talking about student budgeting and student loans.

Chase Bogan graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in studio art, with a concentration in graphic design. He interned with Hanapin Marketing, and was hired as a full-time employee.

Four Ways to Gain Experience Before an Internship

Many college students run into the hurdle of not having enough experience for an internship. This is a common issue: how do you gain experience to gain experience at an internship? The good news is that there are other ways to bulk up your resume and enhance your skills. Check out my suggestions below!

1 . Side hustle

A part-time job, or side hustle, is a great way to develop various skills to add to your resume. Part-time jobs can enhance your soft skills: communication, decision-making, teamwork, work ethic and more. While it may be difficult to balance your class schedule with a job, the practice can improve your organization and planning skills. Megan McKinney: My internship at Ontario Systems was a huge blessing for me. I was able to enhance my knowledge in cybersecurity, computer networking and project management. I have been very blessed to have several mentors that I have been there for me through it all.

When I was 16 years old, I hated public speaking. I wouldn’t speak at church, I wouldn’t stand up and delegate at Girl Scout events, and I would even get nervous when I spoke to groups of 4 or 5 people at a time. As you can imagine, I was mortified when I saw that I had to take a public speaking class in order to graduate from practically any university. So, I tried to take the class in the best way possible, at Ivy Tech Community College in a small class with less people to see my face turn bright red the minute my mouth opened. When I think of first impressions, I often think of face-to-face communication. However, first impressions happen every day on IndianaINTERN.net (IIN)! When you apply to internships on IIN, employers utilize your resume, cover letter and your student profile to see if you’ll make a great fit. If you don’t apply to internships on the site, employers are still able to view your profile and resume. With all of these opportunities to stand out, there shouldn’t be any excuse to leave your IIN profile bare!

When you apply to an internship without completing your profile or attaching your resume, employers have to reach out to ask for more information. That takes time, so sometimes employers completely ignore those applicants.

Tales from the Young Intern

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend “Forward: Tales from the Young CEO”, an Indy Chamber event. This was my first professional event, besides a career fair, so I had almost no expectations going in. My green “first-timer” ribbon proudly displayed, I fumbled around nervously for the first 20 minutes of the networking portion of the event. I was at the mercy of my mentor, Nicole Bieker, as she introduced me to all the people she knew at the event.

Indiana INTERNnet is hosting an afternoon event on March 7 from 3-5 p.m. Interns and college students are invited to meet Peter Dunn, Founder of Pete the Planner, and listen to his lively financial tips. Employers are welcome to invite their interns and attend with them as well.
