How to Ace a Phone Interview

When an employer asks for a phone interview you may have one of two reactions:

or

Either way, here are a few tips that will help you ace that phone interview.

Pick a time that works best for you.

Picking a convenient time can make or break an interview. Block out at least an hour for the interview and ensure you have plenty of time before the call to prepare. There’s nothing worse than going into an interview and feeling rushed.

Take the call in a quiet place.

Taking a call in a quiet place will allow your interviewer to hear you clearly. Background noise can be a distraction to both you and your interviewer. The point of a phone interview is to screen potential candidates, so it’s important your interviewer hears all of the qualifications you have for the position. Choose a quiet room in your house or even a quiet coffee shop to take the call.

Make sure outside distractions are at a minimum.

Just as background noise can be a distraction, outside influences can be distracting too. Make sure everyone in your house knows you have a phone interview and try to find a room away from others. If you have pets, it’s important to be in room with the door closed so you can ensure no distractions.

Do your research.

Phone interviews are much easier if you do your research ahead of time. Having the company website pulled up on your computer, or having a page of detailed notes will help move the conversation along and even make you sound more knowledgeable to the interviewer. It also helps to know the exact position description and what the company is expecting from you.

Put your best foot forward.

Phone interviews can be scary at first, but always remember it’s just another person on the end of the line. You want to impress them and convey the reasons you think you would be the best candidate for the position. Pretend the interview is actually in person, if it helps. Make sure the interviewer gets a great sense of who you are and why you are the best.
