Anyone who has met a college student, knows college can be is stressful. Trying to find the perfect balance between schoolwork, clubs, friends, jobs, athletics, family and more can really take a toll on a person. Most college students do not hesitate to let others know how much homework they have this week or how little sleep they got last night by posting it to all social media platforms. I am not mad about this, since I too have posted about my busy schedule, but I have realized there are ways to avoid these posts.

National Staffing Employee Week was one of the most exciting weeks in my working career thus far! This special occasion was celebrated September 18, 2017 – September 22, 2017, and was my first time meeting my company’s employees and clients. Milliner & Associates (M&A) was super excited to show appreciation for our #StaffingStars (I used that hashtag a lot the past week!). National Staffing Employee Week was a huge learning opportunity for me as well.

Since beginning my internship with M&A, I have learned an infinite amount of information regarding the staffing industry. Three Tips on Finding the Perfect Internship

Most college students know that getting an internship is an integral part of expanding their professional career. Some universities, including mine, even require it. There are websites dedicated to helping student’s find the perfect internship for their majors and/or skill sets, which makes for an easy and comfortable application process. Even uploading your resume to sites such as IndianaINTERN.net or LinkedIn could potentially lead to a recruiter contacting you, and from experience, it is exciting when that happens.

Just because there are plenty of places to see postings for an internship these days, doesn’t mean it is easy to get one. Your resume needs to be perfect and sometimes references, a cover letter, and/or a writing sample are required during the application process, and that is …

8 Months of Learning

This summer, I was surrounded by the staffing industry through my internship with Milliner & Associates (a staffing firm, go figure). Prior to my internship, I didn’t even know staffing firms existed. I sort of knew what temporary workers were (mostly just from watching Ryan on “The Office”), but had no clue how they got there or that they were employed by a third-party agency. For those of you who may not know, a staffing firm forms relationships with area businesses and when the business has a personnel need, they call a staffing firm and they (hopefully) find or already have a job seeker who fits what they’re looking for.

Tips from a Career Fair (not so) Expert

I went to a career fair last fall as a college sophomore. I was nervous, terrified, uncomfortable, and sweaty the entire time I was there and even worse, I had no idea what to expect. The good news is that my friend that made me go had already visited our IUPUI Kelley School of Business career advisor and asked about career fair etiquette. So now I was equipped with a little bit of secondhand preparation from my friend and a resume. No professional experience whatsoever, not even admitted to the Kelley School of Business yet, I went
 blissfully unaware of what I was walking into. I would have liked to have been more prepared but hey, it was fine!

Intern Day at the Indiana State Fair 2017

Last week, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the final intern engagement event of the summer. Local interns and mentors enjoyed a day of networking, trivia and deep-fried food!

The program began with welcoming remarks from Indiana INTERNnet Executive Director Janet Boston, followed by an overview of the fair’s festivities by Alexis Behnkendorf, marketing manager at the Indiana State Fair.

Next on our stage was the keynote speaker, Ashley Miser, community and events manager at IndyHub. She spoke about connecting with Indianapolis, and how it is a great place to work and grow. Miser also admitted she is a foodie and will gladly recommend local eateries to try!

“It’s really important for us [at IndyHub] to make sure people know that you can curate your lifestyle in Indianapolis and that our city is a maker’s space,” said Miser.

Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, I have access to many resources through the American Staffing Association (ASA), one of which is webinars on their website. These webinars are conducted by professionals around the nation who are experts on what they teach. From marketing and social media to employment law and employee engagement, these webinars offer a variety of content with wonderful advice for businesses and people alike.

The most recent webinar I watched was titled “Power Up; Stress Down.” Guided by Adam White, motivational speaker, this webinar covered a lot of great topics and had many great little nuggets of wisdom. While there were plenty of different things that I learned from Adam White, I wanted to share five takeaways:

A Lesson on Personal Branding

Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, I’ve had the opportunity to go to many networking events. The exposure I’ve received in the “big little town” of Indianapolis has been instrumental in developing my professional self and making connections with influential people.

Milliner & Associates is a well-exposed company and I’ve had the ability to attend many networking events, like “Forward: Branding Yourself in Your Business” hosted by the Indy Chamber, and Indiana INTERNnet’s Summer Intern Engagement Event at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. While these events were completely different in formality and tone, they were about the same topic: self-branding.

Things I Learned from High School Students

This week with Milliner & Associates has been full of amazing stories. To give back to the community, our team takes the skills we practice every day at the office and put them to work with high school students. Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is our corporate social responsibility partner. JAG is a state-based not-for-profit organization that helps at-risk students and preventing dropouts. It’s a three-year program that assists high school students during the Junior and Senior years, as well as one year after graduation. The program focuses on gaining practical, real-world experience with career prospects, interviewing, resumes, cover letters, scholarship applications, college applications, and anything else they may need along the way.

Shoes, HR, and Shadows

Through my internship with Milliner & Associates, I have ample opportunity to network and learn about the community of Indianapolis businesses. So much so that I was able attend an afternoon job shadow with seven different human resource (HR) representatives at Finish Line, Inc.

Finish Line is an Indianapolis-based company that brings primarily athletic shoes to the consumer in retail stores nationwide. Employing over 10,000 people at over 900 retail locations, Finish Line prides themselves on delivering “the epic finish” to all customers. There are six full-time Milliner & Associates employees and an intern (that’s me) heading over to such a massive company for half a day was a shock to say the least. I’m not going to lie to you guys

Indiana’s Talent Gap and Brain Drain/Gain Workshop

Last month, I had the opportunity to go to “Indiana’s Talent Gap and Brain Drain/Gain Workshop”, a partnership of Purdue University, Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Lilly Endowment, Inc., and Indiana Commission for Higher Education. The opportunity was presented to me through my internship with Milliner and Associates by my mentor and VP of Operations, Nicole Bieker. The subject was retaining graduates from Indiana’s universities, what it would take to get them to stay, and attracting similar young talent from other states. They had recent college graduates share their experiences as to why they stayed or left Indiana.

What may surprise you is that students aren’t leaving Indiana to go to the glamorous California or the East Coast. They’re moving to other Midwestern states. Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee …

As a business student, this work has been nailed into my head about 1,000 times.

“In order to get a good job, you have to network!”

“It’s super competitive out there, you need to get connections!”

Most of my friends have non-business majors and I’m often asked by them what the deal with business students and networking is—-“It’s like your solution to everything. Are you hungry? Go out and network.” (This is a real quote).

It became a recurring joke. “Hey business student, are you networking?”

 what am I going to do over the summer? Classes? Internship? Work in *shudders* retail?

If you’ve thought any or all of these things in the past few weeks, you’re probably in the same situation as I am. My hope is that by the time you finish reading this, you’ll be a bit calmer and less frantic about the future.

Pete the Planner & Hattie the Intern

I recently had the opportunity to go to Indiana INTERNnet’s Intern Meet & Greet with Pete
 Pete the Planner. If you haven’t heard of him, he’s a financial planner by day and comedian by night. Well, he used to be until he decided to combine the two into one. Now, he writes for USA Today and is the author of ten books. He appears on local news broadcasts regularly to advice others on how to make yourself more financially successful. While he was speaking to the group of interns, he catered his speech to appease his audience by talking about student budgeting and student loans.
