Intern Day at the Indiana State Fair 2017

Last week, Indiana INTERNnet partnered with the Indiana State Fair to host the final intern engagement event of the summer. Local interns and mentors enjoyed a day of networking, trivia and deep-fried food!

The program began with welcoming remarks from Indiana INTERNnet Executive Director Janet Boston, followed by an overview of the fair’s festivities by Alexis Behnkendorf, marketing manager at the Indiana State Fair.

Next on our stage was the keynote speaker, Ashley Miser, community and events manager at IndyHub. She spoke about connecting with Indianapolis, and how it is a great place to work and grow. Miser also admitted she is a foodie and will gladly recommend local eateries to try!

“It’s really important for us [at IndyHub] to make sure people know that you can curate your lifestyle in Indianapolis and that our city is a maker’s space,” said Miser.

After Miser’s remarks, the interns were pumped up to play trivia! The game consisted of four categories: Indiana, Indianapolis, Indiana State Fair and deep-fried food. At the end of the game, two teams had equal point totals which warranted a tie-breaker question. The teams had to guess the number of corn dogs sold at last year’s State Fair (correct answer was 7,416), and the winning team received a prize pack!

Following the program, everyone was released to explore the fair and participate in our social media contests. Interns searched the Fairgrounds for the Indiana INTERNnet team, the first person to tweet a photo taken with them won a prize donated by a local organization. Interns from Delta Faucet, INDOT Crawfordsville District and the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office were the winners!

Additionally, interns could enter a prize drawing by tweeting a photo of themselves having fun at the fair. Hattie Hynes, human resources marketing and employee engagement intern at Milliner & Associates, won the prize drawing!

This event wraps up our summer engagement series for the year. We hope all of the interns and employers gained valuable connections and enjoyed a fun day at the fair! Check out the video our summer intern produced about the event.

Be sure to visit the Indiana State Fair, which run through August 20th, to see all the wonderful sights and taste the delicious food. My suggestions are the peanut butter pineapple pork burger, root beer float milkshake and deep-fried cookie dough!
