Intern Featured on Annual Cover of GRAD Magazine

Itā€™s not every day I get a text message from my coworker asking me if I want to be on the cover of a magazine. Naturally, I play it off as a joke and ask what issue. The next day, she explained how GRAD Magazine, a partnership of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., Indiana Commission for Higher Education and Indiana Business Journal (IBJ) media, wants to feature me on the cover of their annual issue. Apparently, one of my blog posts caught their attention. Flabbergasted, I nodded my affirmation. How could I turn down such an opportunity?

“How could I turn down such an opportunity?’

This was not my first encounter with the statewide, higher education publication. As a matter of fact, I remember picking up a copy in the career center at Anderson University my junior year and flipping through its pages for some valuable advice on how to pay for college and where to go afterwards. I never thought Iā€™d see my face on the cover of it one day.

I have thought of my face on the cover of a magazine before though. Who hasnā€™t after listening to Travie McCoyā€™s ā€œBillionaireā€ song? GRAD Magazine is not exactly Forbes, but it is the Forbes of an Indiana internā€™s world.

“It is theĀ ForbesĀ of an Indiana internā€™s world.”

During my interview with the IBJ, I was reminded of why I started my marketing internship with Indiana INTERNnet (IIN). I was looking for a way to gain marketing experience in the Indianapolis area after getting my MBA. Having had internships before and realizing the immense value that stems from learning about an industry hands-on, applying for IINā€™s opening was the perfect opportunity.

I donā€™t have to tell you about the conferences I got to attend, the movie giveaway I managed and the cake I ate. You already know all about the fun projects and events that happen during an internship. And, maybe you have some stories of your own you want to share.

“I was reminded of why I started my marketing internship.”

So, when the interviewer asked what blog post I would like to see featured in the magazine, I didnā€™t even hesitate. After all, How I Met Your Mother is one of my favorite TV shows, and I had a lot of fun turning Barney Stinsonā€™s phrases into internship tips. The 5 Steps to a Legendary Internship was even picked up by Youternā€™s Savvy Intern blog later that month!

Curious as to what the magazine is all about and how the cover story turned out? Hereā€™s the digital version of GRAD Magazine.

What do you call an intern featured on the cover of a magazine?

A legen-wait-for-it-dary intern. A legendary intern.
