Nothing Stops Us From Honoring Internship Excellence

Keeping with the extreme winter weather patterns we’ve experienced this season, a snowstorm threatened to cancel the 8th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon on Feb. 5.  But it’ll take more than that to keep us from honoring internship excellence! We had so many great stories to celebrate this year [be on the lookout for upcoming blog with winner stories]!

We were honored to have Gerry Dick, the president/managing editor of Grow INdiana Media Ventures and host of Inside INdiana Business, as our MC.  It was also our pleasure to have Peter Dunn, aka Pete the Planner, as our keynote speaker.  Pete is an award-winning comedian and an award-winning financial expert & comedian, author and radio host.

Pete talked about smart financial decisions to those in attendance.  He spoke about the importance of paying student loans immediately after graduating college and how to save 10% of every paycheck, which went along with our theme; “Top 10”.  We featured a video that highlighted Successful Intern Tips from interns and employers.  At the end of the video, a former Indiana INTERNnet intern, Nour Sadek, gave her Top 10 Intern Tips.

Tasks related to IMPACT Awards were one of my first assignments as an intern.  I helped with promoting the event on social media, helped get the award certificates together and mailed out after the event, did a lot of proofreading, as well as some other tasks.

The days leading up to IMPACT Awards were pretty intense due to the weather.  The Indiana INTERNnet staff spent time coming up with a communication plan, possible event cancelation messages and dealing with other last minute details.  The day of IMPACT Awards, I wasn’t able to get back to Indianapolis due to the snow. Although I didn’t contribute as much as I hoped, I did learn a lot.  We have even started brainstorming ideas for the next IMPACT Awards Luncheon.

On behalf of the Indiana INTERNnet staff and board, thank you for all of those who participated in the IMPACT Awards this year, whether it was through submitting a nomination, sponsoring the event or enduring the snowstorm to attend the luncheon. This event showcases the importance of education and workforce development. Internships really make a difference in preparing students for the workforce, and we can’t thank you enough for supporting our mission and making internship excellence a priority in your work.
