Sarah Pelko: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

These are their stories.

Sarah Pelko is a senior at Butler University, graduating in May. She was the public relations and marketing intern with Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America last summer.

Indiana INTERNnet: We understand you had a busy first day at Crossroads of America Council.

Sarah Pelko: My first day was one of the most eye opening experiences I had. My supervisor and I went to a Reaching for Tomorrow field day event at Camp Belzer. This program brought special needs and at risk students from central Indiana counties to camp and let them explore the outdoors while having hands on activities that taught them about different subjects. I could instantly tell that many of these children don’t always have the opportunity to play, learn and interact in an outdoor setting. They all had a look of enthusiasm on their faces when learning about different things. This really helped my passion for Scouting develop.

IIN: Your efforts contributed to the recruitment of nearly 2,500 Boy Scouts? Wow!

SP: Well, I can hardly take credit for that. I assisted by creating an information database that recorded specific neighborhoods, businesses and community centers that had marketing boards. This helped us target areas in which we knew potential members would be going.

IIN: Why is the Boy Scouts organization important?

SP: This organization is so important because it encourages youth to explore. The programs, staff and volunteers are truly dedicated to helping young men and women find a passion in life, whether that is STEM activities, outdoor activities or service activities. It opens the door to finding something to be passionate about.

IIN: What are your future career plans and goals?

SP: I would love to work for a non-profit. I have had several internships in the non-profit world around Indianapolis, and I believe that is where I am supposed to be. However, nothing is set in stone.
