Rachel Slauter: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 3, 2016, at the 10th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

These are their stories.

Rachel Slauter is a recent graduate of Saint Joseph’s College. She has been the marketing intern for the Jasper Foundation, Inc. for nearly two years!

Indiana INTERNnet: You played a large role in the Jasper Foundation’s Season of Giving Gala and the Ladies’ Luncheon. What did you learn from those events?

Rachel Slauter: For both of these events, I took the lead as the spearhead for the planning committee. I took care of all aspects of both events from picking out the invitations to executing the event the day-of. I learned a lot about planning, budgeting and marketing toward our constituents. Taking on my first event, the Ladies Luncheon in 2015 was difficult, because I didn’t know what to expect. However, with the help of my co-workers, I was able to execute it very well. This event set me up on the right path to be the spearhead for the 2015 Season of Giving Gala, which ran a lot smoother as my second event. Currently, I am in the process of planning our 2016 Ladies Luncheon. As my third event with the foundation, I’m able to look at it as something fun and enjoyable, not just work.

IIN: What do you enjoy about working in a community foundation environment?

Slauter: I really like my work environment. I work with two other people: the Executive Director, Kristen Ziese, and the Program Director, Cindy Francis. They allow me to work pretty autonomously, and often times I get to choose the projects I want to work on. They are great about customizing my work experience to suit my future career path. As a marketing student, Kristen and Cindy allow me to execute nearly all of the marketing materials, and they are really great about giving advice on how to best market to our constituents.

IIN: What do you enjoy about living and working in the Rensselaer area?

Slauter: I like the small-town feel of Rensselaer. By working at the Jasper Foundation, I meet a lot of local community members, and it is pretty cool when I am out to eat and recognize some of those same faces. Working for the foundation has allowed be to become better acquainted with not only the Rensselaer area, but Jasper and Newton Counties as a whole.
