Scouting Prepared Me for My Career

Matt Kennett is the marketing and public relations intern at the Crossroads of America Council. He is currently a senior marketing major at Butler University’s Lacy School of Business and will be seeking job opportunities in the near future.

As a senior marketing major at Butler University I am coming closer to graduating and starting my career. In order to become better prepared for the working-world, I decided that I would look for experiences through internships.

When I heard there was an opening as a marketing and public relations intern at Crossroads of America Council, Boy Scouts of America, I jumped at the opportunity. Growing up, I was heavily involved with Scouting and even made it to Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. I was excited to help an organization that gave so much to me and learn anything I could about marketing and public relations.

Upon starting the job in September, I was quickly put to work on important marketing material to be sent out for Scouting events. I created event flyers, helped manage social media channels, and conducted marketing research. I was also able to learn how to write articles for the media and communicate with them appropriately.  What I found the most enjoyable was being able to be creative when working on event flyers. I hope in the future there are opportunities where I can utilize creativity like that again.

In my halfway point meeting I told my superior that I would like to try and attend more meetings. I thought that even though I might not be able to contribute anything I would still learn about other parts of the business. This way I would be able to really see how a non-profit operated and how to work in a business environment.

I noticed from the beginning that Crossroads of America Council is a welcoming place; everyone was kind and wanted to get to know me. As I start my career, I feel better prepared to utilize what I learned in school and in my internships. I look forward to applying these experiences and knowledge to an organization that I feel passionate about.
