Accounting Intern
Description
We are a consulting firm that provides services to clients in the utility industry. Our internal accounting team supports both the day-to-day financial operations of the firm and project-based billing and reporting for client engagements.
The Accounting Intern will work in our corporate office and report directly to the Finance Director. Supervision will include daily task check-ins, weekly progress reviews, and access to guidance and support as the intern works through assigned responsibilities. The intern will receive training on our accounting systems—primarily QuickBooks Online—and internal processes for billing, collections, and expense tracking.
Mentorship will focus on developing professional skills in financial operations and bookkeeping within a service-based business. The intern will also have opportunities to observe how accounting supports strategic decision-making in a consulting environment.
Learning goals include:
-
Gaining hands-on experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks).
-
Understanding the billing cycle, from time tracking to invoicing and collections.
-
Learning how to reconcile payments and track outstanding balances.
-
Developing accuracy and attention to detail in expense reporting and financial data entry.
Responsibilities
The Accounting Intern will work on real financial tasks that directly support our firm’s internal operations. Responsibilities may include:
-
Posting client payments and reconciling them in QuickBooks Online.
-
Assisting with monthly billing processes, including reviewing time entries and preparing draft invoices.
-
Supporting accounts receivable efforts, including monitoring aging reports and assisting with collections follow-up.
-
Helping to verify employee expense reports for accuracy and completeness.
-
Supporting internal process improvements by helping document workflows or templates.
Administrative work (such as filing or organizing records) will be limited and only conducted in support of the core accounting functions above. The intern will not be responsible for high-level financial decisions but will contribute meaningfully to operational accuracy.
Qualifications
This internship is structured for students or recent graduates who are early in their careers. We do not expect the intern to have management experience or an extensive accounting background. A basic understanding of accounting principles and familiarity with spreadsheets or accounting software is helpful but not required.
The intern will receive the support, training, and supervision needed to complete tasks successfully and will be given opportunities to ask questions and learn through doing. Our goal is to help the intern build real-world skills in financial operations, enhance their resume, and gain confidence working in a professional business setting.
